“Cobble, Cobble!”

Is that a rafter of turkeys escaping the Thanksgiving season?? No, that’s the sound of loose rocks that are waiting to trip you up on the trail. Those of you who hike and ride the trails might have noticed an increase of loose cobble* after the 8” rain event last month.  These loose rocks underfoot (or tire) can lead to wipeouts.

We in the SMGA Trail Crew humbly ask that you, as a trail hiker, think about stopping to remove LOOSE cobble from the trail. There is just too much out there for the crew to manage, and you can become a steward of our Natural Areas by helping us in this effort. Please do NOT remove rocks that are firmly embedded on the trail as this can cause erosion and more work for our trail crew. Loose rock, fist size or larger, can be easily removed from the trail as you hike along. Just think—if every hiker removed 20 pieces of loose cobble from the trail our jobs would be done by Thanksgiving!

Kicking loose rocks off to the side of the trail is good; prying up rocks is not.
