My Getaway: A Conversation with Cindy D’Anton

Cindy was born in Tyler, Texas, but moved around to different states. Ultimately, her family settled in Houston, where she received her associate’s degree in nursing.  She moved to San Marcos in 1998,  the year of one of many big floods. Floods aside, though, she still loves it here.  She was particularly excited when Spring Lake Preserve was created, opening up many trails near her home.

Why do you value the natural areas?

I value the natural areas because I can enjoy the beauty of land that has been untouched by man. I also enjoy the peace and quiet and also the occasional wildlife that appears.

Who or what most influenced your view of the natural world?

I believe Leakey,Texas,  was a big influence on my love of nature. I had an opportunity to go there from Houston in the ‘80s. I discovered the amazing stars in the dark skies there on the Frio River, as well as the Hill Country in general.

What is your favorite natural area?

Spring Lake Preserve is my favorite.

What do you most enjoy doing when you visit the Greenbelt?

I enjoy my daily walks there. I feel very fortunate that it’s close to my home.

What recommendations would you give new users of the trail?

I would recommend a trail app** so you won’t get lost or go too far on your first trek.  You’ll also need plenty of water and good shoes.
