Frequently Asked Questions
About SMGA
Is SMGA a nonprofit organization?
Yes! The SMGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating, conserving, and caring for an interconnected system of public trails and natural areas in the greater San Marcos area.
How is SMGA funded?
SMGA is funded through individual donations, memberships, grants, merchandise sales, sponsorships, and support from community partners. Every contribution helps us maintain trails, restore native habitats, purchase tools and supplies, and expand opportunities for people to connect with nature.
Does SMGA own any land?
No. SMGA does not own or manage land. Instead, we work collaboratively with local governments and partner organizations to improve and steward public natural areas and trails.
How is SMGA different from the City of San Marcos Parks Department?
While we often work alongside the City of San Marcos and other partners, SMGA is an independent nonprofit organization that was created to build the community’s capacity for building and maintaining trails.
Does SMGA accept donations?
Absolutely! Donations of any size help us purchase trail tools and materials, restore native habitats, support volunteer programs, and care for the places our community loves. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
How do I get involved as a collaborative organization?
Whether you’re interested in sponsoring a project, organizing a volunteer event, providing in-kind support, or collaborating on conservation initiatives, we’d love to connect! Email us at [email protected]
Volunteering
How can I volunteer with SMGA?
There are many ways to get involved with SMGA, from joining our Trail Crew or Outreach Team to serving on a committee. Visit our Get Involved page to explore volunteer opportunities and find the best fit for your interests.
Do I need experience to volunteer?
Not at all! All of our volunteer opportunities require no prior experience. We’ll provide the tools, training, and guidance, you just need a willingness to help.
What if I don’t like manual labor?
That’s okay! Not every volunteer opportunity involves physical work. We also need volunteers to help with outreach events, such as tabling at community events and giving presentations. You can also serve on a committee by assisting with communications, fundraising, administrative support, graphic design, marketing, and other behind-the-scenes projects. Whatever your skills or interests, there’s a place for you at SMGA. Visit our Get Involved page to explore volunteer opportunities and find the best fit for your interests.
What should I bring to a volunteer workday?
You should wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Bring water and gloves (we also have some you can borrow).
Can children volunteer?
Older children are welcome to join under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian
Can groups or businesses schedule volunteer days?

Can I earn volunteer or service hours?

Trails & Natural Areas
Which trails does SMGA maintain?
SMGA builds and maintains the natural-surface trails in natural areas around San Marcos including land owned by the City of San Marcos and Hays County.
How do I report a trail/natural area problem?
- For maintenance issues along trails, please email [email protected]
- For dangerous hazards that need immediate attention or maintenance related to trailhead infrastructure (toilets, parking lots, etc.) please complete the form here
What should I do if I encounter hurt wildlife?
If you find injured or orphaned wildlife, please avoid handling the animal unless it is in immediate danger. Contact the City of San Marcos Animal Control if the animal is injured or poses an immediate public safety concern at 512-805-2650.
Can I donate tools, equipment, or supplies?
We’re happy to accept the donation of some tools, please email [email protected], or consider coming to a trail crew workday to get involved.
Why do volunteers remove some plants?
Some plants and trees are invasive. These species are harmful to the ecology and wildlife diversity of an area as they often out-compete native plant species that insects, birds, mammals, and other species rely on to survive.
